When Theodor was attending Dartmouth College in his early twenties he was the editor of the college humor magazine, Jack-O-Lantern.

After he and some classmates threw a wild party and got caught, he was challenged by the school administration to resign from all extracurricular activities or face suspension. In lieu of suspension, he resigned and started publishing under the pen name Seuss.

Little did he know that this incident was a blessing in disguise. After publishing several successful books, in 1956 Dr.

Seuss received an honorary doctorate of medicine from Dartmouth College. It was this honorary degree that earned him the title of Dr. Seuss.
