The Monkeypox vaccine is manufactured by Sanofi Pasteur Inc. The vaccine, licensed in the United States in 2018, protects against both monkeypox and smallpox viruses.
The vaccine contains live, weakened orthopoxvirus. The virus is cultured in the laboratory, then quickly frozen and freeze-dried before being shipped to the USA. The vaccine is then reconstituted with a diluent and injected into the arm.
This preventative vaccine is known to be effective in preventing monkeypox infection and has been proven to reduce the incidence of and severity of smallpox virus infections in the countries where it has been introduced.
