Monkey pox is contagious during the first week or so of infection. It is passed through contact with an infected person’s respiratory secretions, such as saliva or mucus, or from direct contact with an infected animal (usually a prairie dog). Infected persons are most contagious during the first 5 days after the onset of rash, but may remain contagious as long as their rash is present.
