edIt is only legal to own a monkey in certain states in the United States. Currently, two states, North Carolina and Missouri, have no laws prohibiting the ownership of monkeys, while in other states there are restrictions or a complete ban. Some states allow non-human primates, including monkeys, to be kept as pets, however the owner must obtain a license from their local or state department of fish and wildlife management.
