A Brass Monkey is a slang term for an old nautical instrument used to measure the temperature of the sea. It consists of a brass or bronze cup, filled with thermometric liquid, attached to a rope and lowered into the water.
The temperature is then read from a scale on the rope which displays the changes when the monkey is lifted out of the water.
