The first monkey in space was a rhesus macaque by the name of Albert II. It was launched on 14 June 1949 in a V2 rocket from White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico, and travelled to an altitude of 83 miles.
Albert II survived the experience but died on impact when the capsule crashed.
