edThe Monkey fist is a knot used to make a heaving line, a weight at the end of a rope thrown overboard from a ship to help sailors moor ships to a dock. To tie a Monkey knot, start by looping the rope into a figure 8 before creating an overhand loop on one side. Keep the running end of the rope in the loop as you wrap the working end around the standing part of the rope nine to twelve times, leaving enough rope for your knot.
Once your wraps are complete, tuck the running end of the rope through the first loop and tighten the knot. Finally, put the running end of the rope through the loop of your original figure 8 and tighten the knot.
With a bit of practice, you’ll be able to tie a Monkey Fist Knot with ease!
