Monkeypox is a rare, zoonotic virus typically transmitted to humans from animals, such as various species of rodents and primates. Humans can also transmit it to one another through close contact with an infected person, through the inhalation of contaminated droplets, or via objects that have been exposed to the virus, such as clothing and bedding. In recent years, there has also been evidence of humans becoming infected with a poxvirus likely derived from an animal reservoir, which is called monkeypox.
