The Monkey Pox virus is believed to have received its name after it was first diagnosed in Laboratory Primates in 195 The primates were infected by a virus that is thought to have spread to humans from animals of the Poxvirus family.

The virus was given the name “Monkey Pox” because of its initial discovered in monkeys. This name then stuck, and is still used to this day to refer to the virus.
