edMonkeypox is a rare viral zoonotic disease, meaning it is transmitted from animals to humans, and can be acquired by direct contact with infected animals or animal materials (such as contaminated bedding or clothing), or by contact with humans who have been infected. It can also be transmitted through airborne particles, contact with infected body fluids, or contact with an infected person’s skin lesions. Direct contact with the animal is by far the most common route of infection.
